GMES and Africa is one of the keynote speakers in Africa GIS 2017 Conference

GMES & Africa Support Programme Coordinator, Dr Tidiane Ouattara is one of the keynote speakers in the upcoming Africa GIS 2017 Conference which will be held in Addis Ababa from 20 to 24 November 2017 under the theme: Geospatial and Statistical information imperatives for the ‘Africa We Want’.

During the five day Africa GIS 2017 conference, leading scholars in the field of Earth Observation deliver keynote speeches. Reports of the latest research outcomes will be discussed in the technical session. Discussions will also be held on topics such as capacity building in the field of GIS and Remote Sensing, Space Policy Programmes and Projects. There will also be exhibitions of posters, product and services in the field of geospatial science and technology.

The Africa we want for the next 50 years is a vision for Africa articulated in the Agenda 2063. It is based on the aspirations of African countries and their people. One of the objectives of GMES & Africa Support programme is Promoting the development in Africa of local capacities, institutional, human and technical resources for access to and exploitation of EO-based services on operational basis for sustainable development. GMES & Africa contribute to the realization of Aspiration 2 and 7 of the Africa Agenda 2063. It is also in line with Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations and objective of Group on Earth Observation (GEO) Strategic Plan 2016–2025. 

The GMES & Africa programme is an important means for the implementation of the Joint Africa-EU Strategy as well as Africa Space Policy and Strategy. 

The Global Monitoring for Environment and Security and Africa (GMES & Africa) initiative is the result of the longstanding cooperation between Africa and Europe in the area of space science & technology, which is one of the key priorities of the long-term EU-Africa Joint Strategy. GMES & Africa Support Programme is administered by the African Union Commission through the Human Resource, Science and Technology (HRST) Commission.
